Bullitt County History

The Knobs of Northwestern Bullitt County

Many people view the knobs of Bullitt County as hills that stick up out of the surrounding countryside. Actually they are the remnants of the eroded edge of a plateau that runs from southern Indiana southward.

The existence of this plateau can best be experienced by motorists who drive from Bullitt County south to Elizabethtown. As you approach that community, you climb what appears to be a rather steep hill, but when you reach Elizabethtown the terrain levels out for you have reached the top of the plateau.

This terrain map shows this dividing line. The Salt River passes through on its way to the Ohio River which runs along the eastern side of this plateau.

Most of northwestern Bullitt County is covered by the remains of this dissected plateau, with various streams rising out of it and flowing as tributaries into Pond Creek and Salt River to the west. The northernmost ones include, from north to south, Brier Creek that is mostly in Jefferson County, Weavers Run, Knob Creek and its Curry Branch.

The map below shows a zoomed in view of northwestern Bullitt County, and you can see how these streams have left behind ridge tops with steep sides dropping down to the streams.
